When your nonprofit is stronger, all of us are stronger. Join us for this thoughtfully curated conference on Thursday, December 8, 2020, designed to make your organization stronger. This one-of-its-kind conference is an opportunity for all of us to learn from - and aspire to - the best practices of exceptional nonprofits.

With the 2019 Awards program underway, and our 13 semifinalists announced in August, we asked the expert Selection Committee about insights and trends they gleaned from the Awards program. Here's what some of them had to say:

Can you describe reoccurring management practice themes that you see organizations doing each year?

"In recent years, organizations are getting better at not only tracking results, but also using their data to inform decisions. Organizations also seem to be realizing how interconnected their work is in different departments, and they are trying to avoid silos." - Laurel Molloy, Founder & Chief Consultant, Innovations Quantified, Committee member since: 2013

Is there something that stands out from what you've learned about the applicants over the years?

"There is often a cycle to the process for the best applicants. In their first year, we notice some great practices, but they don't quite rise to the top because they haven't quite got the 'swing of things.' If they come back, they are often much better prepared to present their strengths in subsequent years. Winners are often repeat applicants that have honed their application and pitch." - Joseph Barretto, Principal, Barretto Consulting, Committee member since: 2017

What brings you back to volunteering to the Selection Committee each year?

"What keeps me coming back is the in-person presentations to select the winners. Seeing the applicants' stories come to life and talking to them in person is so energizing. Additionally, the environment that the Nonprofit Excellence Awards Management Committee creates, and the incredible minds and great personalities on the Selection Committee, pull me back year after year. Each year I learn new things. It's a lot of work, but it's so worth it!" - Dawn Khan, Director of Technology Services, RoundTable Technology, Committee member since: 2012

"Really well done! The sessions were very substantive and I love that the conference book included a tool for each Area of Excellence."

"A key unexpected highlight for me was the "networking," which is a word I don't really like and an activity I don't really look forward to. But I do really like meeting new people, and it turned out that I randomly sat next to people at every event who was interesting and helpful to me in very specific ways. From the insurance broker to the Salesforce consultant to the fellow operations manager from a small nonprofit -- each person I randomly sat next to was really USEFUL to me and fun to get to know, and warm and helpful ... I will definitely come back to this!"

"It was an excellent conference, with lots of opportunities to network with, and learn from, my peers. Thank you. I hope to be able to attend again in the future."
