Nonprofit New York convenes the sector

We represent and engage with nonprofit organizations across all subsectors and budget sizes to drive systemic change toward a more equitable, just, and thriving nonprofit sector.

Nonprofit New York’s movement-building efforts are guided by our annual Policy Platform that we develop every year in collaboration with members of our Board’s Advocacy Committee, Government Relations Council, and the Coalition to Advance Nonprofits, as well as ongoing engagement with nonprofit stakeholders, including other intermediaries and partner organizations. We believe there is an urgent need for action to support, recognize, and respect the sector’s vital work.

Every month, Nonprofit New York publishes a Policy Roundup newsletter that shares federal, state, and city updates and advocacy opportunities for New York City’s nonprofit sector.

Coalitions

Government Relations Council

Nonprofit New York’s Government Relations Council (GRC) meets monthly to consider and, where appropriate, comment on legislative and regulatory developments affecting New York’s nonprofit sector. The council consists of nonprofit general counsel and law firm partners specializing in nonprofit law. The GRC interacts regularly with government officials, including heads of city and state agencies, the Charities Bureau of the New York State Attorney General, and elected officials. The GRC uses its voice to amplify the concerns of the sector.

Coalition to Advance Nonprofits

The Coalition to Advance Nonprofits (CAN) is a sector-wide coalition formed in response to the COVID-19 crisis. CAN coordinates federal, state, and city advocacy efforts on behalf of the sector and is grounded in Nonprofit New York’s Declaration of Nonprofit Rights:

“In Every County, Across All Budget Sizes” Report

In April 2023, Nonprofit New York, in collaboration with SeaChange Capital Partners and Candid, released “In Every County, Across All Budget Sizes: White Overrepresentation in the New York City Area’s Nonprofit Leadership,” a comprehensive analysis of the racial demographics of NYC nonprofit leadership. Our findings showed that while the broader nonprofit workforce comprises mostly women and people of color, executive leadership remains disproportionately white. The report offers recommendations for boards, funders, and nonprofit leaders to work together to build a sector where leadership better reflects the diversity of NYC and the communities served.

Nonprofit New York’s ongoing work includes establishing partnerships and collaborations with BIPOC-led organizations to jointly identify policy priorities that facilitate demographic shifts in leadership.
