In Conversation With Beat the Streets

Programs Coordinator Devon Stein spoke with Beat the Streets a member organization of Nonprofit New York. We will continue to highlight the work of our members because we believe when your nonprofit is stronger, all of us are stronger.

Tell me about the organization and what you do.
Beat the Streets is a sports-based youth development program whose mission is to help student-athletes achieve their goals on and off the mat while strengthening the wrestling culture of NYC. Beat the Streets runs a high impact program called the "Academy," a 35-member middle school wrestling league, a training center and various opportunities to participate in camps, clinics and travel competition opportunities.

How many people are on your team?

What population do you serve?
K-12th Grade

Where do you see your organization in the next five years or ten years?
Growing our Academy program to 200+ kids, enhancing our program with a professional internship program and additional forms of support upon high school graduation.

How has partnering with Nonprofit New York helped you succeed?
The workshops, the connections and various other forms of support have been very helpful.

What are you currently working on that you want us to mention to our membership?
We are launching an ambitious campaign to secure a new venue to house all of our operations - wrestling practice and other fitness opportunities, classroom space, and other meeting space for our coaches, staff, student-athletes and other members of our community with access, 6-7 days/wk. We have also grown as a staff and deepening our impact with the success of our high impact program, "The Academy".
