Location: Northeast US. Open for remote work, with “as needed” attendance at office in New York’s Upper East Side.

The New York City-based Vaclav Havel Library Foundation (VHLF) seeks an interim executive director to lead the foundation into a new phase of growth and impact. The position is ideal for a seasoned professional who wants a part-time assignment (up to 3 days a week) and is eager to take a small but dynamic organization to the next phase of development in partnership with the board. The successful candidate must be a motivated self-starter with the experience, ideas, and contacts needed to raise funds, develop a reliable donor base, and guide the foundation through an exciting period of transition.
About the Vaclav Havel Library Foundation
VHLF is a nonprofit 501(c)3 organization that promotes democratic freedoms, universal human rights, and the power of the arts to uplift and transform our lives in the spirit of Vaclav Havel. Havel, a Czech playwright, dissident, and president of Czechoslovakia (later the Czech Republic), is known for his plays satirizing the Communist period and his writings on democracy, human rights, and civic engagement, which continue to inspire human rights activists around the world.
Our programming includes an annual theater festival, prestigious annual human rights/literary award, public lectures and panel discussions, student exchanges, special cultural events, and the development of archival resources. For more information, see vhlf.org.
Main Responsibilities
—Develop and implement a fundraising plan.
—Organize our annual fundraising gala.
—Plan and oversee implementation of existing programs; when feasible, explore possibilities for new programming directions.
—Supervise public relations and communications, including website maintenance.
—Oversee day-to-day operations.
—Serve as the public face of the organization.
—Support the work of the board.
Requirements
—A bachelor’s degree in a relevant field. Master’s degree preferred.
—A proven record of successful fundraising, with the contacts and know-how needed to plan and implement an effective fundraising approach.
—Experience in nonprofit management.
—Demonstrable leadership and networking skills.
—A solid understanding of current events, human rights, and the arts.
—The ability to work independently, with keen attention to detail.
—The ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
—Competence with MS Office and website management.
