Deputy Director

StreetSquash

New York, NY

StreetSquash’s mission is to provide consistent, long-term, and reliable support to the children, families, and schools in Harlem. By exposing students to a broad range of experiences and by maintaining the highest standards, StreetSquash helps all participants realize their academic, athletic, and personal potential.

StreetSquash, based in Harlem, NY, invites nominations and applications for the position of Deputy Director (DD) and seeks a dynamic, team-oriented leader with a deep-rooted commitment to supporting youth from underserved communities to step into this mission-critical role. The successful candidate should have a proven record of success building programs and initiatives focused on youth development and enrichment as a vehicle for social impact and as an essential component of equity and access. The DD will report to the organization’s Executive Director and will have responsibility for improving and maximizing all of StreetSquash’s internal operations, including programming, staff development, and student and family support, and will play an integral role in advocating for and advancing athletics and educational equity throughout New York City.

StreetSquash was founded in Harlem in September 1999 as the second squash and education program in the United States. Today, StreetSquash remains a comprehensive youth enrichment program that combines academic tutoring, squash instruction, community service, college preparation, leadership development, and mentoring for young people ages 11-24. Now in its third decade and poised for continued growth and impact, the Deputy Director will work closely with the Executive Director to shape the continued evolution and strategic development of StreetSquash and its programs, including increasing the number of students who have the opportunity to participate, and will partner with the other members of the senior management team to ensure the highest quality programs, experience, and outcomes for StreetSquash’s students and families.

The DD will be a collaborative and students-first leader as well as an effective administrator–someone who can nimbly balance overseeing the daily operations of the organization with keeping an eye on the big picture and recognizing opportunities for improvement. In addition, the DD must bring a lived and deep commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and will prioritize building and sustaining positive and effective working relationships with colleagues, students, and the larger squash community. The successful candidate must be able to create and nurture effective partnerships and alliances with the local community in Harlem, and should have experience fostering an inclusive and welcoming organizational culture, including an appreciation for the importance of creating space for difficult or uncomfortable conversations.
