Job Category: Other
Location: Brooklyn
Job Sectors: Education
Salary Range: $60,000-$100,000

Saint Ann’s School (PreK-12, www.saintannsny.org) is a non-religious independent school in Brooklyn, NY seeing an English teacher for a full-time one-year leave replacement. We seek the rare combination of a passionate teacher and learned scholar who is thrilled to share that passion with students ranging form grades 4-12, and who is excited to teach in a flexible, creative environment. Teachers at Saint Ann’s enjoy a great deal of freedom in the classroom and are encouraged to introduce their own scholarly interests to their students within the parameters of the curriculum.

Saint Ann’s teachers are committed to working with students from various backgrounds; applicants must be committed to meeting students’ individual needs, and must also be invested in the school’s ongoing DEI work. In the English department, this work includes rigorous and continuous scrutiny of texts and course offerings and an on-going examination of our pedagogy.

We do not give grades. Instead, twice a year teachers write full-page reports on each student’s progress. This is a big task and not for a reluctant writer, but teachers who get behind our written reports find it more rewarding and satisfying than giving grades. An equitable and individualized approach to evaluating students is expected.

Extensive knowledge in the field of English is required, though significant self-study is taken as seriously as advanced degrees. Some experience working with children is helpful, though teaching experience is not a requirement.

Saint Ann’s is among the largest and most selective independent schools in New York City, known for the breadth and depth of its curriculum in academic disciplines and the visual and performing arts. Since its founding in 1965, Saint Ann’s has embraced a commitment to education for its own sake, oriented to the capacities of each individual student, free of the encumbrances of formal grading, prizes, and rankings. The lives of our graduates speak powerfully to the potential of an education based on these principles to ignite a love of learning and sustain creative energy in every field of endeavor. We accomplish this by bringing together talented teachers with creative and motivated students. Seeking to create a community rooted in trust and equity, we invite each other to take risks, pursue knowledge, and celebrate growth. Saint Ann’s is committed to centering anti-racism in the life of the school.

  • Communicate regularly and effectively with Division Heads and Grade Deans about student progress.

  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with students, colleagues, and administrators. Participate in parent conferences and attend school events.

  • Meet regularly with the Department Chair and participate in weekly department meetings.

  • Participate in grade-level and school-wide meetings as needed.

  • Write comprehensive narrative reports for each student twice a year.

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • Strong familiarity with the subject area.

  • A passion for literature; creativity and flexibility in conveying complex ideas to students of all ages.

  • Strong written and oral communication skills.

  • Strong planning and organizational skills.

  • Ability to thrive with a great deal of independence and autonomy.

This is a full time faculty  position with a competitive compensation package including benefits. Salary range of $60,000-$100,000, commensurate with education and experience.
