TITLE: Policy & Advocacy Coordinator

REPORTS TO: Vice President, Policy

BASIC FUNCTION: The Policy & Advocacy Coordinator is a highly-motivated and detailed person who will actively support and execute Nonprofit New York’s policy and advocacy programs.  The Policy & Advocacy Coordinator values coalition work, relationship-building, and campaign organizing; and has a demonstrated aptitude for policy monitoring, research, action planning and implementation, and advancing concrete policy wins.  The Policy & Advocacy Coordinator also recognizes the importance of project management, systems building, and communication.

CLASSIFICATION: Non-Exempt

LOCATION: The Policy & Advocacy Coordinator will work primarily out of New York City but travel to Albany, New York  and Washington, DC may be required.

BACKGROUND: Nonprofit New York champions and strengthens nonprofits through capacity-building and advocacy to cultivate a unified, just, and powerful sector.  Nonprofit New York is a membership-based organization comprised of close to 1,000 nonprofit organizations in the greater New York City area.  We provide resources and education to our members, and the broader sector, to have the tools and support they need to be effective, just, and sustainable.  We convene nonprofits to act in solidarity with one another across differences in size, budget, and mission to be a relentless collective force for good.

With a Board representing all key nonprofit subsectors, and a full-time staff of eight, Nonprofit New York operates on a budget of $2.3 million per year.  We are a small team that brings curiosity to our work, collaborates intentionally, has fun, and finds inspiration in our mission.  See www.nonprofitnewyork.org for more information.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

Nonprofit New York Policy Programming

  • Coordinate and support policy monitoring, synthesis, and regular reporting to inform our members and the broader sector of policy changes that will impact their organizations
  • Logistical coordination for regular coalition, working group, and other policy convening groups
  • General support and logistical coordination for policy forums, town halls, and other events to brief members, and the broader sector, on relevant policy updates that will impact nonprofits
  • Note-taking for policy convening meetings
  • Coordination of and support drafting periodic policy reports

Advocacy Campaign Support

  • Logistical coordination for legislative and policy campaigns of the organization, including coalition meeting preparation, note-taking, and facilitation as needed
  • Project management and assessment of campaign work plans to advance Nonprofit New York’s legislative and policy agenda
  • Written and oral testimony for governmental committee hearings and public comment
  • Regular attendance and engagement in coalitions and campaigns Nonprofit New York is a member partner, including the National Council of Nonprofits and campaigns at city and state levels
  • Support with developing an annual legislative and policy agenda through research, listening sessions, assessments, and member participation
  • Planning and coordination for days of action, lobby days, rallies, and other organizing actions
  • Coordination of surveys and assessments of sector issues to inform organizational policy priorities
  • Maintain, update, and revise databases and policy information resources

Administration

  • Track and report on annual and quarterly objectives for policy programs
  • Administrative support filing lobbying reports, submitting check requests, and tracking deliverables for grant reports

QUALIFICATIONS:

Skills & Experience

  • 2 or more years of professional, volunteer, or demonstrated experience working in a similar role
  • At least 1 year of experience supporting and coordinating coalition and policy campaigns
  • Background in community organizing a plus
  • Comfortable with quantitative and qualitative data analysis for policy research
  • Strong writing skills
  • Enthusiasm for public policy analysis and writing
  • Salesforce experience a plus
  • Understanding of the nonprofit policy landscape, including pressing policy issues relevant to the sector
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility
  • Knowledgeable working in databases
  • Understanding of nonprofit management, infrastructure, and capacity building a plus

SALARY: $55,000-$65,000 per year.  Excellent working environment and generous benefits (health insurance, dental, vision, paid time-off, sick days, holidays, 401(k) retirement with 5% match contributions).

REMOTE WORK: Nonprofit New York has a five-day week work schedule and a hybrid in-office policy.  We currently have two in-person days in the office per week.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This position is primarily a sedentary role.  However, the person in this position may need to occasionally move about inside the office to liaise with internal staff, access files, office machinery and a copy machine/printer.
