Executive Director

  • Part Time
  • Senior Level
Job Category: Executive
Location: Manhattan
Job Sectors: Community Improvement, Education, Human Services

play:groundNYC is a non-profit organization dedicated to transforming the city through play. Our playworkers support children’s play at our adventure playground — The Yard — and through partnerships with community organizations in diverse neighborhoods across New York City.

play:groundNYC is reimagining the urban environment as a place for all children to play, create and explore, regardless of demographic status. We do this by providing spaces for young people to play, providing professional development, school programming and training a new generation of playworkers.

play:groundNYC’s Executive Director leads the organization, maintaining current operations and partnerships while setting the stage for new projects and funding streams. The Executive Director is a part-time position, responsible for the day-to-day operation of the organization, as well as the expansion of events, public-facing projects, and fundraising. The Executive Director manages the administration, programs, and strategic growth of the organization. Other key duties include fundraising, marketing, community outreach, and engagement.

The majority of the job will be performed remotely, with a flexible schedule as play:groundNYC does not have a physical office location. During Governors Island open season, the Executive Director should expect to be present at The Yard on Governors Island on a weekly basis.

The position reports directly to the Board of Directors; the Executive Director works closely with the Board Chair and Board Committees. Less than a decade old, play:groundNYC is in the exciting process of transitioning from a working Board to a sustaining one. The Executive Director can expect to help steward this process while continuing to rely on the working resources of the current Board.

play:groundNYC is looking to hire an individual with a commitment to children’s rights and social justice. We STRONGLY RECOMMEND that interested candidates visit The Yard on Governors Island (open from 12-4pm on weekends through October 31) to see our core program in action. We welcome applicants with a playful spirit and a willingness to take on a complex, hands-on role, including, at times, getting a bit of mud on their clothes!
