POSITION: ESOL Teacher: English for Parents

STATUS: Full-time exempt

LOCATION: New York City

START DATE: August 2021

Literacy Partners strengthens families through a two-generation approach to education. With our free classes, community-based workshops, and educational media, low-income parents develop the literacy and language skills they need to succeed in today’s world. Our research-based curriculum also incorporates child development and parenting support to help parents boost their children’s early reading, school readiness, and social emotional growth.

The Position: The English for Parents Teacher will be responsible for teaching four classes of ESOL adult students who are parents of young children. Currently, the program meets online. The innovative program meets twice a week via zoom for two hours each session, but is supplemented by volunteers who support speaking and vocabulary activities both in and outside of the classroom and a weekly Parent Workshop that is team-taught.

Classes are designed for parents of young children and emphasize parent-child connections, reading with children, early childhood development, and health literacy. We focus on parents in order to have a two-generation impact: helping low-income, immigrant parents gain the skills they need to create a better life for themselves while advancing their children’s cognitive development and health.

Reporting to the Program Manager, English for Parents, this position is a member of a three-person teaching team and will join our diverse, social justice-oriented team of 27 staff and more than 100 interns and volunteers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead four online English for Parents classes and weekly workshop for parents (18 direct teaching hours per week) for 36 weeks.

  • Collaborate with the ESOL teacher team and program manager to develop, adapt and execute lesson plans that integrate reading with children, connection between parent and child, and health literacy.

  • Ensure lessons are logically sequenced, level appropriate, address various learning styles within the online environment and adhere to the scope and sequence.

  • Maintain a class atmosphere that is culturally responsive and inclusive.

  • Include all students in lessons, elicit responses from less vocal students, work one-on-one with students as needed.

  • Work with Health Equity Manager and support staff  to ensure that students’ extracurricular needs are met (e.g., referring students for assistance, coordinating with counselors to arrange and prepare workshops, and integrating materials and information in the classes).

  • Manage in-class volunteers and interns and integrate them meaningfully into the lessons using a communicative language approach.

  • Report on key indicators of students’ progress through the use of BEST Plus testing, registration information, and surveys.

  • Participate in weekly Community of Practice, attend staff and program meetings, and participate in professional development opportunities.
