About the Justice Committee: The Justice Committee (JC) is a grassroots organization dedicated to building a movement against police violence and systemic racism in NYC. We organize New Yorkers of color who are directly impacted by racist and abusive policing to lead campaigns that decrease police violence, increase police accountability and reduce the size, scope, and budget of the NYPD. For almost 40 years the JC has been supporting and organizing families who have lost loved ones to the NYPD. 

 

Job Summary: 

The Development Coordinator is a full-time position that is responsible for working with relevant staff and members to plan, execute and evaluate JC’s fundraising strategy. This position plays a crucial role in ensuring the organization has the financial resources we need to advance campaign goals and objectives, support and uplift the leadership of survivors of police violence and families who’ve lost loved ones to the NYPD, and build true safety for our communities.

 

The Development Coordinator will report to Director of Development and Operations.

 

Responsibilities: 

 

Planning and Systems (10%)

  • Coordinate development, implementation and monitoring of comprehensive annual and multi-year development plans to project and raise annual budget goals and advance JC’s campaign priorities – in collaboration with relevant staff and members.

  • Maintain and strengthen JC’s systems and processes for identifying, tracking and engaging prospects, donors and institutional funders.

 

Individual Donor Fundraising and Fundraising Team Coordination (40%)

  • Coordinate, build and develop the skills of JC’s Fundraising Team, which is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating JC’s annual individual donor workplan.

  • Coordinate and recruit for JC’s Fundraising Team to develop and manage individual donor fundraising campaigns, events and activities, and donor recruitment and cultivation tactics. This includes managing turn-out for monthly Fundraising Team meetings, maintaining team records and ensuring timely and effective communication with team members, as well as other JC members, staff and board as needed.

 

Foundation Fundraising (35%)

  • Research, draft, submit, track and steward proposals for foundation prospects with a long-term relationship approach and ensure timely submission of reports.

  • Coordinate foundation site visits and ongoing communication with institutional prospects and funders. Coordination of site visits includes ensuring that JC staff, members and Board Members participate when appropriate and are well-prepared to do so.

 

Communications (10%)

  • Develop and promote public communications (e.g. eblasts, social media etc.) to build JC’s profile and support fundraising efforts.

Other (5%)

  • Financial management and oversight, working with the ED: Liase with JC’s book-keeper and accountant , review budget-to-actual reports, draft projected budgets, ensure timely payment of vendors, and oversee income.

  • Limited administrative duties, shared with the full JC staff.

Experience and Skill Requirements:

  • Demonstrated alignment with JC’s mission and commitment to building safety, wellness and power in communities of color in NYC.

  • At least 3-5 years of experience fundraising from individuals and foundations.

  • Track record in effective project planning, implementation and evaluation.

  • Ability to write and communicate clearly and quickly.

  • Strong interpersonal communication and facilitation skills, including experience leading teams to consensus decisions and collective action.

  • Organized, detail oriented, and demonstrated ability to manage multiple fundraising campaigns and projects, with a strong ability to effectively prioritize work.

  • Collaborative person who is also capable of working independently.

  • Ability to work evenings/weekends as necessary.

  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred.

  • Knowledge of the landscape of the New York City anti-police violence movement preferred.

Compensation and Schedule: This is a full-time salaried position with a generous benefits package. Current annual salary range for this position is $65k-$80k  based on experience and qualifications. Most work will be during business hours, but schedule varies based on activities of the project/campaign, and will require working some evenings and weekends, as needed.
