Background
Hudson River Community Sailing (HRCS) is a youth development and community sailing nonprofit founded in 2008. Through our dual mission we develop academic success and leadership in underserved NYC youth, and provide maritime education to the city at large. We work in partnership with public schools to teach STEM and leadership to students through sailing and boatbuilding. HRCS serves the broader community through a Community Sailing school that provides access to the waterfront for all New Yorkers through a wide range of programs. The two sides of our work support one another, creating a supportive community dedicated to marine access, education, and a sense of belonging.
Position Summary
HRCS seeks an innovative and passionate team member to join a small, hardworking, and fun staff dedicated to supporting students through a waterfront community of students, members, and volunteers. The Director of Finance and Human Resources should have a desire to work with young people and foster a meaningful educational experience and is responsible for financial plans and processes, as well as human resource operations and other office duties.
The Director of Finance and Human Resources will report directly to the Executive Director and manage the Assistant Bookkeeper. This is a full-time, hybrid position.
Responsibilities

Work closely with the Executive Director to develop financial plans and projections.

Conduct financial analyses to provide insight into the organization’s operations and strategic plans.

Oversee the payment and A/R processes for HRCS’s varied revenue streams, including government contracting, membership, 3rd party processors, etc. to ensure all payments are received and processed in a timely manner.

Support budget development and implementation. Work with directors to analyze expenses and revenue in various programs.

Liaise with retained outside accounting firm (Jitasa) to ensure all financial documentation in Quickbooks is up-to-date and accurate.

Liaise with Justworks, HRCS’ professional employer organization, regarding all aspects human resource operations, payroll, and benefits..

Support the Finance Committee of the Board of Directors including building agendas for quarterly meetings, providing analyses on performance and supporting committee objectives.

Work with the Bookkeeping Assistant to assure all financial and administrative processes are effective, efficient, well-documented, and communicated.

Review internal controls, and document accounting and bookkeeping policies and procedures.

Oversee insurance including maintaining an up to date asset schedule and requesting documentation.

Direct annual audit and tax processes.

Review and update Employee Handbook and other organization manuals on annual basis.
Primary Relationships
-
Management Team – assist with hiring practices as well as on and offboarding of full and part time staff as needed, provide financial data by program to inform decision making and participate in weekly management meetings to help oversee strategic direction of the organization and participate in leadership decisions.

Partner with Development department to collect and share data for grants.
Preferred qualifications:
-
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or equivalent

4-6 years’ experience in finance and / or HR roles, equivalent consulting experience acceptable, non-profit experience preferred but not required

Strong written and verbal communication skills

Data management proficiency, including experience with spreadsheets such as Excel or Google sheets

Experience with Quickbooks

Willingness and availability to work occasional evenings and weekends, around event times, and provide office support as needed

Ability to multitask and work in a busy environment and small, non-traditional office, where collaboration and communication are key to success

Compensation and Salary Range:

Full-time salaried exempt position: $72,000 – $80,000, commensurate with experience
