For over a century, Girl Scouts has been instilling generations of girls with the skills and knowledge to become young women of courage, confidence, and character, to speak out and be leaders. Today, Girl Scouts of Greater New York (GSGNY) is delivering its message of empowerment and engaging more than 38,000 girls of every race, background, and religion. GSGNY’s vision is a New York City in which every girl feels empowered to lead in her community, the workplace, and the world. GSGNY has become a hub for innovation within the broader Girl Scouts movement, presenting new ways to engage and inspire the next generation of young leaders.  

Recent investments and initiatives include: 

        • The Leadership Institute provides middle and high school aged girls with 21st century leadership skills and subject-specific knowledge and experiences that will help girls reshape their views on leadership and about their own potential to transform into powerful agents of change, while equipping them to succeed in school and their future careers. 

        • Troop 6000 is the first Girl Scout program specially designed to serve the thousands of girls currently living in the New York City homeless shelter system.  

        • Cybersecurity Programs at Girl Scouts were designed to serve the evolving needs of New York City’s girls and New York City’s workforce. With the goal of encouraging girls to consider careers that require STEM skills, this program ensures girls have the tools and knowledge they need to safely navigate our increasingly tech-driven world.  

        • Anti-Racist and Anti-Bias Training: We teach girls to lead by example, and to that end, we are committed to doing the work necessary to become an anti-racist organization. We are working to partner with experts in the areas of race, inclusion, and equity to conduct a series of trainings. 

        • Camp Kaufmann: The camp experience is an essential part of Girl Scouting – and as the only Girl Scout council in the nation serving a 100% urban population, we prioritize offering high quality outdoor education opportunities to New York City girls. We recently upgraded and enhanced facilities at our 425-acre Camp Kaufmann in Dutchess County, including the construction of a new swimming pool. 


The Opportunity 

The Girl Scouts of Greater New York is seeking an experienced Chief Operating Officer (COO) to support the growing leadership role of GSGNY and increase the successful impact of creating a New York City in which every girl feels empowered to lead in her community, the workplace, and the world. GSGNY is moving forward to its next level of growth. Agile and informed by lessons learned during the pandemic and amidst national calls for social justice and equity, the COO will work collaboratively to execute strategies, systems, policies, initiatives, and programs across the organization. The COO will play a key role in leading and optimizing GSGNY’s operations and practices to deliver strategic, equitable and highly successful outcomes for the girls and volunteers we serve in New York City. The COO will refine and build a cost-efficient and scalable operational infrastructure that will facilitate GSGNY’s growth and sustainability, overseeing the day-to-day operations of GSGNY. 

A key member of the Executive Leadership Team, the COO reports to and works in partnership with the CEO, Meridith Maskara, and will manage and collaborate with a team of five direct reports: 

        • Chief Financial Officer 

        • Chief Program Officer 

        • Chief Strategy Officer 

        • Chief People Officer 

        • VP, Advancement 


The Chief Strategy Officer, Chief People Officer and the VP, Advancement will maintain a dotted line reporting relationship to the CEO. 


Job Responsibilities: 

Strategic Leadership (Planning and Execution) 

        • Translate CEO’s vision for GSGNY into actionable plans for delivering on all operational priorities. 

        • Execute on the CEO’s vision for growth and innovation, while ensuring operational excellence in Finance, IT, HR, Programs & Membership, Marketing & Communications, Product Programs & Retail/Girl Scout Cookies, Fundraising and Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI). 

        • Implement effective change management strategies ensuring stakeholder buy-in and cohesion in making measurable improvements to Council operations. 

        • Manage the development of data for internal and external use cross-functionally, analyzing and interpreting key programmatic data and organizational metrics, and making recommendations based on data. 

        • Support and hold accountable direct reports and all staff to ensure internal decision-making uses an equity lens. 

        • Partner with VP, Advancement on fundraising strategy, benchmarks, and processes to ensure they support operational, programmatic and cash flow needs. 

        • Work directly with the CEO to develop and oversee tools, systems, and financial reports to provide critical operational information and make actionable recommendations. 

        • Ensure all financial and operational aspects of GSGNY align with strategic goals and priorities. 

        • Ensure the mission and vision of GSGNY are integrated in the overall goals and workflow of the organization. 

        • Develop a strong, operational partnership with the CEO, Executive Leadership Team, and the Board of Directors, providing strategic updates and supporting special initiatives. 


Operational Excellence and Systems Development 

        • Act as a key partner to CEO, by providing guidance, refinements and operational excellence to multi-year strategic planning and implementationsupport efforts to center equity in the GSGNY multi-year strategic plan and annual goals, connecting DEI to overall organizational strategy. 

        • Optimize technology across the organization to increase operational efficiency and mitigate risk. 

        • Partner with CEO and CFO on financial strategy and planning. 

        • Evaluate GSGNY’s core business operations, identifying and developing innovative organizational capabilities that are both technical and people driven. 

        • Partner with Chief People Officer to further develop an inclusive and equitable culture, by continuing to hire, engage and retain a diverse team, and support organizational plans to deepen racial equity efforts. 

        • In partnership with the Chief People Officer and the Equity & Antiracism Task Force, promote the design and effective communication of the current and future vision of GSGNY’s inclusive culture including plans for long and short-term goals and key deliverables. 

        • Proven success coaching and managing others, effectively communicating across disciplines. 

        • Collaborative approach to leadership, effective cross-functional communicator, and motivator, driving team and organizational growth and impact. 

        • Demonstrated nonprofit financial fluency. 

        • Develop a technology and infrastructure strategy leveraging best practices in applications, software, and system platforms. 

        • Serve as a liaison to designated Board committees. 


Candidate Requirements:  

        • A sincere commitment to the Girl Scouts of Greater New York’s mission and values. 

        • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience required, Master’s degree in business or related field preferred. 

        • A track record of implementing the appropriate systems, organizational structures, and processes to achieve the organization’s KPI’s; an expert collaborator who can solve complex challenges and support cross-functional and diverse teams across the organization. 

        • 8+ years of experience in senior level nonprofit operations roles, with demonstrated accomplishment overseeing strategy and planning, talent/HR and organizational development, programs, operations, and finance functions. 

        • Experience leading nonprofit organizations through periods of change and growth. 

        • Prior experience in a dynamic, inventory-based business strongly preferred. 

        • Exceptional project manager with the ability to plan, investmanage, and communicate effectively with others to achieve objectives. 

        • Demonstrated experience engaging and partnering with a nonprofit Board of Directors, ensuring consistent and open communication. 

        • Expertise designing and implementing operational processes that promote collaboration, break down silos, and expand organizational impact. 

        • Demonstrated experience leading and supporting project and program-based teams. 

        • Deep analytical skills and experience interpreting financial models. 

        • Ability to relate openly and comfortably with diverse groups of peopleboth internally and externally from a wide variety of backgrounds.  



        • The highest degree of professionalism and emotional intelligence; skilled at building and sustaining excellent relationships across an organization. 

        • Strategic orientation with a proven ability to manage daily nonprofit operations. 

        • Exceptional interpersonal skills; able to inspire and motivate staff, donors, and Board members 

        • Inclusive leadership style, cultural competence. 

        • Change management and project management skills.
