Organizational Background: Founded in 1986, the Coalition for Asian American Children and Families (CACF) is the nation’s only pan-Asian children and families’ advocacy organization that brings together community-based organizations as well as youth and parents to fight for equity for Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) children and families. In addition to its work to improve the health and well-being of AAPI children in New York City, CACF works to transform the AAPI community by fostering collaboration, promoting community leadership, and building a collective voice.

CACF is seeking a full-time Director of Policy and Government Affairs to oversee various advocacy campaigns that aim to promote equity for the Asian American and Pacific Islander community in the City and State. 

Primary Responsibilities
The Director of Policy and Government Affairs will report to the Co-Executive Directors and lead the development, execution, and evaluation of CACF’s policy advocacy portfolio that includes education equity, health equity, budget equity, data disaggregation, and language access. Candidates must be prepared to work closely with policymakers, CACF member agencies and partners, students, community leaders, elected and appointed officials and other advocacy organizations. The Director of Policy will supervise CACF’s policy team, and work closely with member agencies and allies in numerous strategic collaborations to influence legislative and budget outcomes to positively impact NY’s AAPI community. 

  • Oversee development of policy and legislative agenda and strategy aligned with CACF’s strategic plan
  • Build relationships with City and State policymakers and government agencies to address administrative and legislative issues. 
  • Lead a high-impact policy team
  • Manage CACF’s collaborative advocacy campaigns and CACF’s representation in external collaboration
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of policy advocacy work and campaigns. 
  • Represent CACF at hearings, workshops, and conferences when strategic
  • Collaborate on communications strategy to share achievements, updates, and information related to CACF’s core policy areas as well as press strategy to connect to reporters, respond to interview requests, and engage press on key CACF issues.
  • Support fundraising strategy. 

Qualifications, Education and Experience Required 

  • Commitment to CACF’s mission, children’s rights, social justice, and racial justice. 
  • Master’s degree (or equivalent experience in a policy-related field). 
  • Strong understanding of AAPI communities and non-profit organizations. 
  • 3-5 years working with the AAPI community. 
  • Understanding of legislative, budget, and administrative advocacy and policymaking. 
  • Demonstrated understanding of current political landscape and demonstrated political savviness. 
  • Candidate should have experience with and knowledge of state and/or city government 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; persuasive communicator with a keen eye for detail. 
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with varied constituencies, including Board members, staff, young people, social service organizations, elected and appointed officials, and government agencies 
  • Capacities to lead, innovate, break new ground, take risks, and take public stances on issues. 
  • Supervisory experience and ability to work with diverse staff and flexibility to work on multiple tasks under pressure. 
  • Excellent skills in researching and identifying new policy/advocacy opportunities 
  • Strong management skills, including the ability to set priorities among multiple responsibilities 

Preferred 

  • Previous knowledge or experience in child care, education, health, budget advocacy, and AAPI issues. 
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a non-profit organization or functional equivalent.
  • Background in coalition building, program development, supervision, research, and fundraising.
  • Ability to write and speak an Asian dialect. 

Salary and Benefits

Annual starting salary is $90,000.  Excellent medical, dental, and vision benefits, including 100% coverage of employee premium costs. Four weeks vacation plus 13 paid holidays. 403(b) plan pre-tax deduction for retirement and pre-tax commuter benefits plan available.
