Clal – The National Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership – is seeking a full-time, strategic, driven, and organized leader to join our dynamic team and take our financial and administrative operations to the next level. Our organization is a think tank and leadership development center focused on training leaders in pluralism and on helping people with different beliefs find common ground. The Controller will play a critical role in ensuring the financial integrity, stability, and transparency of our organization. The Controller will report to the Executive Vice President and the President and collaborate with our whole team to support our growth and deepen our impact.

 

Position Summary

 

The Controller is a key member of our senior team and – as such – has a high degree of responsibility and autonomy. You will be responsible for the day-to-day financial operations of Clal, including ongoing collaboration with outside providers (bookkeeping firm, accounting firm for audits, invoicing platform, etc.), and the management of payroll and employee benefits.

Financial Management

  • Oversee day-to-day financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and retirement contributions.

  • Ensure accurate and timely recording of financial transactions in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and relevant regulations.

  • Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, budgets, and forecasts for presentation to leadership and the board of directors.

  • Monitor cash flow and investment activities, making recommendations for optimal fund utilization.

  • Manage insurance policies and other employee benefits.

Financial Controls

  • Develop and implement internal controls to safeguard assets, prevent fraud, and ensure accurate financial reporting.

  • Establish and maintain financial policies and procedures that align with best practices and industry standards.

  • Review and approve financial transactions to maintain accuracy and consistency.

  • Analyze financial data to identify trends, opportunities, and risks, offering recommendations for optimization.

Reporting and Compliance

  • Prepare financial reports, analyses, and presentations for internal and external stakeholders.

  • Collaborate with external auditors to facilitate the annual audit and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.

  • Oversee the preparation and filing of tax forms, including Form 990.

Grants and Fund Management

  • Monitor and report on grant and funding activities, ensuring compliance with grant agreements and reporting requirements.

  • Work closely with program managers to develop budgets for grant proposals and manage grant-related financial reporting.

  • Seek ways to improve and streamline operations and processes, taking the initiative to explore such avenues and reporting back to the team

 

Team Leadership

  • Foster a collaborative and inclusive work environment that encourages continuous learning and growth.

  • Supervise Clal’s Director of Program Administration and Operations

  • Meet regularly with the senior executive team (EVP and President)

  • Lead Clal’s weekly Admin Team Meeting

  • Explore other avenues to build camaraderie and teamwork

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation preferred.

  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant nonprofit financial management experience.

  • Strong knowledge of GAAP, nonprofit accounting principles, and financial reporting requirements.

  • Proficiency in financial management software and tools (e.g., QuickBooks, Excel).

  • Exceptional analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities, with a proven track record of effectively collaborating with diverse teams.

  • Demonstrated leadership experience and the ability to motivate and develop staff.

  • Commitment to the organization’s mission and values, with an understanding of and respect for Jewish culture and traditions (Jewish background not required).

 

Compensation

 

  • Salary range is $90-100K, depending on experience

  • Up to $1,000 to set up a home office, if necessary
