Executive Director, New York
Executive Director, City Year New York
Vice President, City Year
New York, New York
City Year seeks an inclusive, dynamic, entrepreneurial, and team-oriented leader to serve as the next executive director (ED) of City Year New York, a premier education nonprofit committed to improving outcomes for all NYC students, especially those in underserved communities. Currently, City Year New York deploys 225 AmeriCorps members (ACMs) who serve more than 6,000 students in 17 New York City public schools. The site has a team of 61 staff, a 16-member advisory board, and a budget of just over $15 million. This critical hire will lead City Year New York (CYNY) as the site takes a principal role in nearly 20 community schools across the city. The expansion of City Year’s model into community schools is a shift from the site’s previous arrangement with the district and will allow CYNY to deepen its commitment to students, families, and communities across New York City, in pursuit of advocating for and advancing educational equity.
CYNY is one of the largest City Year sites with tremendous potential for even more significant impact, and the next executive director will be tasked with increasing the site’s visibility and footprint in the non-profit and philanthropic sectors. The ED will also serve as a Vice President in the national leadership structure and will be expected to collaborate on national strategies to deepen the organization’s impact across the country. Founded in 1988, City Year is an education-focused national service organization and a leader in the national service movement. City Year has always been committed to developing and nurturing young people and believes that investing in them contributes to strong and vibrant communities.
The Executive Director of the New York site is responsible for leading, motivating, and retaining a passionate and experienced staff and ensuring that City Year New York meets its impact, revenue, recruitment, district partnership, and external relations goals. In addition, the ED will be expected to lead the effort to increase CYNY’s visibility and brand awareness in a competitive and crowded market, including the ongoing work of building strong community and grassroots relationships and actively participating in city-wide efforts to address systemic challenges confronting the New York City public schools and their students. The ED also holds primary responsibility for the site’s financial and operational strength and systems.
The ideal ED candidate will be a values-driven leader who prioritizes equity, teamwork, and transparency; a strategic and creative executive who can collaboratively develop and then implement an inspiring roadmap for the site’s future; and a tested administrator who will bring the business smarts and financial acumen needed to sustain and innovate on City Year’s model, especially given the current pivot to supporting New York City’s community schools. Key to the site’s continued success is a leader who values and believes in developing staff, building a culture of accountability, and leading with tenacity and humility. This individual must be comfortable and effective as the public face of the site and will prioritize attracting funding and other resources for CYNY programs while also collaborating with and across City Year’s national network.
Inquiries, nominations, and applications should be directed in confidence to the Isaacson, Miller team. Candidates should provide a resume that reflects work experience and a cover letter that addresses personal interest in the role.
