WHO WE ARE

Founded in 2004, Build Change is an innovative international non‐profit social enterprise whose mission is to save lives in earthquakes and hurricanes. We do that by designing disaster-resistant houses and schools; training homeowners, builders, engineers and government officials to build them; working with governments to develop and implement building standards; partnering with the private sector to improve building materials quality and create jobs; and facilitating access to incentive-based capital for reconstruction and retrofitting by partnering with financing institutions and government subsidy programs.

YOUR NEW OPPORTUNITY
Build Change is expanding its global footprint and breadth and depth of programming and is seeking a highly experienced manager and leader to serve as organization President and COO. Functions include finance, operations, HR, IT, legal, board management, fundraising and communications, and program oversight of donor-funded projects.

 

This position reports to the CEO. The President/COO also reports three times a year to the Build Change Board of Directors.

 

Your Responsibilities

Diversity, Inclusion, Well-Being and Team Building

      • Diversity and Inclusion: Continue Build Change’s groundbreaking diversity and inclusion culture by expanding activities and quantifying metrics
      • Performance Management: Manage employee performance, oversee the annual review cycle; work with team to translate strategy into executable plans
      • Team Engagement and Wellbeing: Engage the full team through quarterly all-team meetings, evolve Build Change’s MPH (Mental and Physical Health) Days and policies, create an environment of motivation, care and closeness
      • Recruiting and Succession Planning: Lead recruiting efforts and continue to develop Build Change’s next groups of leaders

 Governance and Board Management Functions

      • Serve as organization Secretary and Treasurer, and fulfill duties as listed in Build Change Bylaws, including distribution and filing of board minutes, maintaining filing and registrations
      • Schedule board meetings, prepare board reports, work with CEO to set board meeting agenda
      • Provide regular updates to the Build Change Board
      • Support the CEO with recruitment of new board members

 Fund and Business Development and Communications

      • Oversee financial reporting on fund development
      • Oversee production of annual report
      • Oversee fund development campaigns for individuals and board members
      • Oversee organization marketing and communications activities

 Finance Functions 

      • Oversee all financial matters for headquarters and country programs
      • Ensure financial compliance and manage budgets
      • Work with CEO, country staff and development staff to prepare budgets, pricing and financial reports to clients, donors and Board of Directors
      • Supervise Controller, who is responsible for the following:
        • Maintaining master set of accounts using QuickBooks, processing payroll, submitting certain federal, state and local returns, and other accounting-related matters as requested
        • Ensure GAAP and audit-compliant processes and oversee annual audit
        • File annual 990 return and other filings and tax documents
        • Prepare monthly financial reports for CEO and Board financial reports for Board meetings
        • Manage all weekly and monthly financial activity, including cash flow management, individual project budgets, bill payments, purchase requests and funds transfer requests
        • Review timesheets and payroll for accuracy on a semi-monthly basis
        • Manage financial aspects of projects, including budget tracking, monthly financial reporting, invoicing, accounts receivables management
        • Determine and manage billing rates and obtain official NICRA from USAID
        • Manage all banking relationships and online banking activity
        • Manage all budget-related activities including preparation of annual budgets and individual project budgets 

Operations Functions 

      • Manage leases and contracts for office space, vehicles, and other service providers such as internet, insurance and banking
      • Oversee all Build Change operations, including interacting with vendors and clients, including pro bono legal support, insurance providers, landlords, and other vendors
      • Oversee continued implementation of audit‐compliant procurement systems for building materials and other office equipment and supplies
      • Implement Build Change Standard Operating Procedures, Safety and Security Procedures for country programs
      • Implement security plans for all offices, serve as Global and US Country Office Security Focal Point

HR Functions 

      • Oversee all HR matters for Global and country programs, including resolving any HR issues
      • Supervise HR Staff at Global and provide guidance to HR Managers at country offices
      • Assure Build Change performs within the laws and regulations at Global and country offices
      • Oversee Controller to manage and implement employee manuals and policies for Global and country offices
      • Oversee Controller on recruiting, onboarding and offboarding of all Global and expat employees
      • Supervise support staff to:
        • Prepare offer letters for new hires and contract agreements for outside contractors
        • Manage employee health insurance and emergency evacuation insurance for Global and expat employees
        • Oversee leave requests and time-off balances
        • Oversee annual performance and salary reviews
        • With support of HR staff, lead Build Change’s recruiting efforts for US and expatriate staff, including volunteers and interns
        • Manage employee benefit programs for US and expatriate staff  

IT and Communications Functions

      • Manage IT staff and consultants, including website consultants, graphic design consultants and other consultants
      • Ensure Build Change website security and oversee regular updates
      • Maintain and expand Build Change file server, ensure program and compliance documents are organized and regularly uploaded from project countries
      • Maintain functioning, up‐to‐date IT systems including hardware and software, ensure data remains backed up, virus free, and secure
      • Purchase and seek donations of equipment and services
      • Maintain phone and internet systems and implement systems for remote communication
      • Support development staff with consolidation and use of contact and donor tracking databases

Legal Functions

      • Maintain and expand relationships with Build Change’s pro bono legal counsel, work with pro bono lawyers to obtain legal assistance on certain subjects
      • Standardize employee contracts and contracts with vendors and clients
      • Take proactive steps to protect Build Change intellectual property
      • Manage all registrations and filings and support country program staff with in-country registrations
      • Maintain current registrations with USAID and secure new registrations as required 

 

 OUR IDEAL CANDIDATE

 You have:

      • 10 years’ minimum experience in COO, CFO, or equivalent leadership position for an internal non-profit or for-profit company
      • Advanced college degree in Business Administration or something similar
      • The ability to lead, make decisions, and delegate to ensure the organization sets and meets key objectives, grows and maintains financial stability, and achieves its mission
      • The ability and desire to be a leader and a behavioral role model

Your experience includes: 

      • Maintaining oversight of budget and ensuring financial compliance
      • Efficient operations oversight ranging from IT, legal, website, contracts and vendors
      • Diversity and inclusion programming, wellness programming, implementation of anti-harassment and anti-bias policies and programs
      • Managing decentralized teams, including team members in similar time zones and in very different time zones
      • Working closely with communications, fund development, program implementation and advocacy team members

You would describe yourself as:

      • Drama-free, optimistic, flexible, humble, patient, and having a good sense of humor
      • Fluent in English

And maybe you also:

      • Have worked in the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia or emerging nations
      • Speak Spanish or any of the languages spoken in our program countries
      • Have experience with housing policy, engineering design, software development, and/or access to finance
