Ballet Tech, a not-for-profit tuition-free ballet school, is looking for a People & Culture Manager. Reporting to the COO and the Artistic Director, the People and Culture Manager oversees the organization’s human resources and DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Access) functions. This person will be responsible for the effective execution of people-related administrative tasks, functions and initiatives, including: employee onboarding, benefits administration, payroll interface, internal event coordination, and the support of the overall employee experience. The Manager will play a key role in ensuring that all processes within HR/payroll run smoothly. In addition, the Manager will work to develop and manage programs to support DEIA goals for the entire institution.


The Manager will be an advocate for employees and administration, considering and balancing the needs of both in the advancement of the organization’s strategic goals. The role requires a strong communicator with excellent attention to detail, a DEIA facilitator, and a keen observer of workplace culture, equity and employee engagement with the ability to identify opportunities for improvement. The Manager will be committed to the support of positive, inclusive, and equitable employee relations in service to a workforce of creative and talented employees who are proud to be part of New York’s only tuition-free ballet school, and will help to facilitate an effective learning environment for all of our students.




•             Assesses needs and manages strategies to foster a supported, satisfied, and engaged workforce and to optimize communication within and between departments. Develops approaches to encourage collaboration, belonging, and trust, while effectively balancing employee and organizational needs.

•             Makes recommendations to and works with senior management for improvements where necessary, and implements approved changes including the employee handbook.

•             Maintains up-to-date knowledge of all applicable laws pertaining to employment and ensures organizational compliance. Provides guidance and counsel on their interpretation and implementation, including but not limited to EEO, ADA, FMLA, and FLSA.

•             Establishes and maintains HR/employee records, ensuring compliance with recordkeeping protocol.

•             Participates in payroll entry and review.




•             Coordinates recruitment activities for full-time and part-time staff.

•             Manages onboarding of new employees.

•             Manages job descriptions in partnership with directors and managers to ensure they are up-to-date, effective, and consistent for all positions.

•             Identifies needs and opportunities for employee training and development.

•             Recommends initiatives that enhance employee performance, support individual employee growth, and recognize accomplishments – and develops, implements, and evaluates approved plans to achieve those goals.

•             Ensures the completion, documentation, and tracking of all required trainings.



•             Manages DEIA initiatives

•             Provides guidance, coaching, and counseling to employees and managers on a wide range of employee relations.

•             Plans and executes initiatives to promote a positive, inclusive, and equitable work environment, free from discrimination, harassment, intimidation, or hostile / offensive behavior.



•             Cultivates an environment that encourages staff to view the People & Culture Manager as an ally and safe space by maintaining confidence, visibility, honesty, and transparency.

•             Provides guidance and coaching to employees, leadership, and supervisors to guarantee that staff are informed of avenues for support and reporting concerns.

•             Develops approaches to encourage collaboration, belonging, and trust, while effectively balancing employee and organizational needs.

•             Conducts investigations and recommends actions to resolve employee complaints.



●             Bachelor’s degree.

●             4 to 6 years of related experience.

●             Ability to work in an environment that requires confidentiality, a high level of collaboration, discretion, multi-tasking, diplomacy, and tact.

●             Strong interpersonal skills, with demonstrated ability in problem solving and conflict resolution.

●             Strong knowledge of human resource policies, programs, and procedures, along with a comprehensive understanding of applicable federal, state, and local employment laws.

●             Exceptional knowledge of recruiting best practices and strategies to identify the broadest range of candidates.

●             Demonstrated ability to perform needs analysis and create inclusive and equitable approaches and initiatives relating to retention, employee engagement, professional development, and DEIA training.

●             Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

●             Strong computer skills. Familiarity with online payroll systems a plus.

●             Experience working in a non-profit and/or arts organization desired.

●             Committed to continuous improvement and a culture of learning.

In addition to a competitive salary of $65,000 to $75,000 per year, Ballet Tech provides:
