POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: SCIENCE TEACHER

Saint Ann’s School is a non-sectarian K-12 independent school in Brooklyn, NY looking for a full-time science teacher. A school that exists to serve talented, intellectually accomplished and curious students, we seek faculty who are passionate about their subject and able to convey both information and a love of learning to children of a variety of ages. We are particularly interested in applicants with comfort teaching physics and/or chemistry, but creative and passionate teachers in all scientific fields will be considered.

Saint Ann’s science teachers can count on many resources: a generally accepted curriculum, collaborative colleagues and supportive administrators. However, teachers are expected to tailor or redesign their courses according to their own passion; this creative, exciting work of owning the class requires a tremendous engagement with the material that in turn is passed on to students. Traditional teaching methods are encouraged as are innovative formats and assessments that fit the styles and personalities of the teachers and students–our teachers are committed to working with students from different backgrounds and must be invested in the school’s ongoing DEI work.

At Saint Ann’s School, we do not give grades or use any other form of comparative metric to evaluate students. Instead, twice a year, teachers write full page reports on each student’s progress. This is a major undertaking and not for a reluctant writer, but we find our written reports more rewarding and satisfying than giving grades. The endeavor of analyzing and describing student work in an equitable way can highlight a great deal about the processes of learning and teaching science.

Extensive knowledge in your field of science is required, though research, independent academic work, and practical science application are taken as seriously as advanced degrees. Teaching experience is helpful but not a requirement.
