The New York City Program

Currently, our New York City Program’s grantmaking addresses new approaches for closing gaps in care so that the highest-need patients can attain health stability and well-being. Our grantmaking spans one or more of the four following areas: improving data connectivity to find and follow high need patients, improving access to mental health services, increasing care coordination, and innovative care models. The New York City program team also supports a smaller conservation-related effort focused on creating and activating greenspace to benefit health in underserved neighborhoods.

Position Summary

The Associate Program Officer (APO) will work as part of the New York City Program team supporting grant work for this program. The APO will help with preparing and managing components of the grantmaking process, including completing monitoring reports, tracking program budgets, ensuring accurate payment of grants, helping to plan and execute meetings, communicating with grantees, and working with other relevant Helmsley staff. The APO will also have the opportunity to provide substantive programmatic support to a growing portfolio of grants. This role is well suited for candidates with an interest in health projects and philanthropy.

Responsibilities: 

  • Assist with monitoring reporting and preparation of reporting documents, payments, and other grantmaking and monitoring tasks
  • Assist in the planning and execution of meetings and events
  • Assist Program Officer and NYC team with research around proposed areas of interest for potential grantmaking initiatives across Helmsley’s programs
  • Represent Helmsley along with the program team at select meetings and on-site visits
  • Respond to inquiries from a wide range of constituencies, handling correspondence
  • Assist with the development of outcomes, metrics, and systems for collecting data and measuring the impact of the grant portfolio
  • Administrative responsibilities related to the above and to other areas as needed 

Qualifications: 

  • Undergraduate degree or graduate degree in a relevant field
  • At least 2-3 years working in health, human service non-profits, government, or related field is required, with work in NYC preferred
  • Excellent writing skills and experience working with data, budgets, and other quantitative information – attention to detail a must
  • Must be organized and have strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Must demonstrate strong written and oral presentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative, to prioritize and accurately complete multiple tasks, and to work under deadlines
  • Experience and inclination to work in a team-oriented environment
  • Able to maintain confidentiality of information
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency with MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Outlook
  • A strong team player with a diplomatic, professional manner
