About Kings Against Violence Initiative (KAVI)

 

KAVI is a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) youth-serving organization with a mission to prevent and eliminate interpersonal violence from the lives of young people through advocacy, peer leadership, community mobilization, and social justice. 

 

KAVI promotes community wellness and healing by operating high-impact youth violence prevention and intervention programs in Central Brooklyn. Our programs take place in hospital-based, school, and community settings. We are a fast-paced, rapidly growing nonprofit organization. Position
The Director of Finance will be a strategic thought-partner, and report to the co-executive directors (Co-EDs). The successful candidate will be a hands-on and participative manager and will lead a team of consultants and develop and grow the organization’s internal capacities in  the following areas: accounting, bookkeeping, financial planning, budgeting, and reporting.

 

The Director of Finance will play a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision making and operations as KAVI continues to enhance its quality programming and build capacity. This is a tremendous opportunity for an innovative, thoughtful finance leader to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of a well-respected, high-impact organization.

Responsibilities
Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the Co-EDs; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes; and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status.

  • Oversee the integrity of the accounting general ledgers and systems, ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements

     

 

  • Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial statements; collate financial reporting materials for all donor segments, and oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting.

     

 

  • Coordinate and lead the annual audit, Form 990 filing and charitable solicitation processes, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors and executive directors; assess any changes necessary.

     

 

  • Oversee any required audits related to governmental funding

     

 

  • Manage external bookkeepers and/or internal KAVI finance team to ensure adherence to GAAP & governmental reporting requirements, alignment to budget

     

 

  • Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting.

     

 

  • In partnership with the Director of Development, implement a robust contracts management and financial management/ reporting system; ensure that the contract billing and collection schedule is adhered to and that financial data and cash flow are steady and support operational requirements.

     

 

  • Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual.

     

 

  • Effectively communicate and present the critical financial matters to the board of directors and Executive Directors.

     

 

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree with CPA;  ideally an MBA/CPA or related degree

     

 

  • At least seven to 10 years of overall professional experience;  six or more years of broad financial and administrative/operations management experience

     

 

  • The ideal candidate has experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area.

     

 

  • Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with — diverse stakeholders including programmatic and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds

     

 

  • A track record or familiarity with grants management and financial reporting, particularly in the area of government funding

     

 

  • Technology savvy with experience selecting and overseeing software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; knowledge of accounting and reporting software

     

 

  • A successful track record in setting priorities; keen analytic, organization and problem solving skills which support and enable sound decision making

     

 

  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders

     

 

  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of KAVI

     

 

Core Competencies

 

  • Knowledge of public sector or non-profit funding, budget structures, and best practices

     

 

  • Expert knowledge of Quickbooks, Excel, Outlook, Word and other Microsoft Office Suite programs

     

 

  • Ability to listen and respond to the concerns/ideas of others

     

 

  • Experience with managing grants and contracts, including Federal, State, City, and foundations in a not-for-profit or social service setting

     

 

  • Strong organizational skills, and the ability to prioritize, multi-task, and work under deadlines

     

 

  • Ability to apply creative solutions to assignments

     

 

Compensation: The starting salary for the full-time  Director of Finance position is budgeted for $120,000 a year. Generous benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, paid vacation, sick leave, transportation benefits, life insurance and more.
