The Carver Center has been the heart of Port Chester since its founding in 1943. What began as a storefront daycare program for African American families, is now a vibrant hub of programs and services that support and empower Port Chester residents at every stage of life.

The Carver Center truly reflects the Village of Port Chester, growing, evolving, and diverse, where individuals take pride in meeting the needs of their neighbors. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carver’s programs are focused on the holistic wellbeing of children, families, young adults, and seniors: from addressing food insecurity, enriching out-of-school time, developing teens and tweens, supporting new citizens, and providing family recreation opportunities. The variety of programs run by the Carver Center have a profound impact on the community at large, but activities remain very personal in service to their mission of “building brighter futures.”

Carver’s leadership and staff is dedicated to building responsive services and growing organizational sustainability. Consequently, there is tremendous opportunity for the next Chief Program Officer to innovate, scale, and refine programs that make a difference in Port Chester.

The Carver Center is seeking a Chief Program Officer to support programmatic growth and excellence in meeting the community’s future needs. This position is ideal for a community-minded, social service professional with an aptitude for operations and enthusiasm for seizing opportunities. The ideal candidate is also an experienced manager of people, who focuses on building relationships, developing staff, and fostering a team-centered environment.

The Position

The Chief Program Officer will work closely with senior leadership and lead a strong program staff to ensure that the Carver Center’s year-round programs meet the evolving needs of the Port Chester community. With a facility that includes classrooms, a full-court gymnasium, a fully equipped kitchen, a food market, and the community’s only public pool, Carver’s programs have a broad reach and enormous potential for future impact.

The CPO’s major areas of focus will include:

1.     Ensuring that the Carver Center’s profile of programs and services focused on poverty-alleviation/self-sufficiency, youth development, and enrichment meet high standards of operational and administrative excellence, while remaining conscious of and responsive to emerging needs and opportunities in the community.

2.     Providing leadership to and managing the efforts of the program team through mentorship and professional development.

3.     Connecting and communicating with diverse community members to build and nurture robust partnerships and support volunteer engagement.

Team Development, Mentorship, and Management: Foster a team-oriented, supportive, and accountable work environment; provide inspiring leadership to ensure staff reaches new levels of effectiveness and programmatic impact

Community Engagement and Partnership: Create outreach initiatives and partnerships to deepen programmatic impact, promote collaboration, and increase organizational profile; develop and grow external relationships that reflect community diversity

Qualifications

·       At least 10 years of programmatic experience, with an emphasis on delivering core human services (for example, one or more of these areas: food nutrition and security, child and youth development, recreation and sports, supporting English learners, etc.)

·       5–7 years diverse people management experience: a seasoned supervisor and coach who is comfortable with and committed to fostering staff development

·       Strong project management skills managing complex, multifaceted projects resulting in measurable successes and program growth

·       Ability to work a flexible schedule to support daytime, evening, and weekend programming on an alternating basis

·       Verbal and written fluency in Spanish is highly desirable

Compensation

This is an outstanding opportunity to lead a growing and impactful program area at a respected and effective community-based nonprofit organization, while partnering closely with the CEO and senior management team. This full-time, exempt position has a salary range of $95,000-$115,000, though final salary offer will be commensurate with experience. Benefits include paid time off, 11 paid holidays, group life and long-term disability insurance, medical, dental and vision, simple IRA matching contributions.
