Position Description

Background: Formed by the sale of the Legacy Fidelis New York Medicaid health plan, the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation (MCHF) is one of the largest foundations in the United States, and the largest focused solely on New York State. It has an asset base of approximately $3.2 billion and a budget that will include approximately $150 million in grant awards annually to improve the health of underserved New Yorkers, eliminate barriers to care, bridge gaps in health services, and address social determinants of health.

Since its inception in early 2018, the leadership of MCHF has been creating a strong and vibrant organization to serve New York and is building a team to lead it during this critical startup period and into the future.  A key member of this team will be the Director of Community Relations who can provide an effective, external relations strategy to advance the foundation’s public-facing agenda, promote constructive relations with community organizations and governments, and serve as a source of information inside the foundation about the advocacy needs of the nonprofit community and related government and public policy.

Position: The Director of Community Relations (“Director”) will be a creative, well-networked, smart and experienced professional working with both public and private sectors. The Director must be a connector able to forge productive relationships with public officials and leaders in the healthcare industry and local communities throughout NYS.  Crucially important to this role is someone who understands the vitality and diversity of the state and the issues affecting the communities served by the foundation.  The Director should also be able to identify opportunities relevant to community agencies serving vulnerable populations.

Reporting to the Chief Administrative Officer, the Director will have the opportunity to grow with the MCHF and build an effective team of their own.  Further, the Director must be able to work closely with Cabrini’s Board and staff in a supportive and direct manner with a minimum of ego and that emphasizes cooperation, teamwork and consensus.  In addition, they should be diplomatic, of the highest integrity, and possess sound judgment as well as a sense of humor.  

Specific Responsibilities:
•    Monitor and analyze New York City and New York State legislative activities related to the foundation’s objectives.
•    Examine, promote and participate in informed discussion of public policy issues particularly about the social determinants of health including poverty, food security, education, housing and immigration.
•    Raise the profile of the foundation’s programs with strategic partners and foster partnerships for influence and impact with key stakeholders in change (including private sector, government, civil society and the media).
•    Develop and staff, along with the director of communications, a committee of regional ambassadors
•    Serve as an outside nominating committee to fill vacancies on the foundation board of directors (as well as a training ground for potential board members).
•    Act as an ongoing liaison with the community, particularly with respect to identifying community needs and priorities for future efforts of the foundation.
•    Conduct critical assessments of the foundation’s interaction with the community it serves and periodic reviews of the performance of the foundation in meeting its mission, from the community’s perspective.

Qualifications
•    Bachelor’s Degree; advanced degree in healthcare administration, business, social science, public relations, advertising, marketing, or a related field preferred.
•    At least 5 years’ experience working within government, political and/or community services organizations with community-based initiatives.
•    Proven leadership experience with excellent critical thinking, decision- making, and team building skills
•    Innovative and strategic thinker capable of building strong rapport and relationships with diverse stakeholders.
•    Deep, personal commitment to the mission and vision of the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation and the community it serves, as well as experience with the myriad issues affecting underserved populations.
•    Ability to converse in Spanish preferred. 
•    Exceptional oral and written communications abilities, including effective listening and presentation skills for diverse audiences.
•    Strong organizational skills, high attention to detail and the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
•    Excellent personal, political, analytical, communications and community/government relations skills.
•    Very strong interpersonal, collaborative and working relationship skills as well as the ability to work independently.
•    Flexibility and adaptability to changing priorities.
•    Experience working with and respect for culturally diverse stakeholders.
•    Highest levels of integrity and professionalism.
•    Able to travel periodically within New York State.
