Overview

 

The Jain Family Institute (“JFI”) is seeking a PhD candidate or masters graduate with a strong background in econometrics, development economics and experimental design as a research fellow. This researcher will support our work with cities on designing and piloting guaranteed income policies. This position is a part-time remote role with the potential to transition into an in-office permanent role.

The research team at JFI is examining the effects of guaranteed income as a policy alternative to improve economic, social and psychological wellbeing. JFI and its team of affiliated and non-affiliated researchers at Princeton, NYU and  Fluminense Federal University, Brazil are conducting program evaluations  to examine effects of an unconditional cash transfer on consumption, labor, social interactions and wellbeing for city governments in the United States and in Maricá, Brazil.

JFI seeks a research fellow in economics to support the team in building experimental and quasi experimental pilots for our city government partners.  The research fellow will join a small team of researchers in economics, sociology, public policy and political science. The fellow will work closely with JFI’s Director of Research and the guaranteed income research team.

Responsibilities 

 

Time commitment: approximately 20-30 hours a week

Confidentiality: as needed

The fellow’s tasks will include:

  • Advising and working with city government partners to build out elements of the research design

  • Refining and reviewing design elements including conducting validity and robustness checks

  • Developing analysis models for the experimental design

  • Working and engaging with the research team and academic advisors

 

Required Skills And Qualifications

  • Expertise in econometrics, experimental and quasi-experimental design and causal inference 

  • Expertise in elements of pilot design, including survey designs, sampling, and statistical power

  • Expertise and interest in development economics and updates in the field 

  • Strong skills in statistical programming in STATA and/or R

  • Interest in applied research in development policy, specifically cash transfer policies

  • Demonstrated experience as a research assistant or comparable experience in pilot design and implementation

  • A stipend of $15,000, paid in semi-monthly installments of $1,250 for six months with renewal based on performance

Commitment

 

  • The position will be remote at least until the end of the year, though there may be opportunities, if so desired, to work from our Manhattan office on occasion. However, you will need to be present and online during your set working hours, and as needed for research meetings and presentations. Our typical hours are 10am – 6pm EST.
