 About the Organization

 The Dwelling Place of NY (“TDP”), a sponsored ministry of the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, NY, is a privately funded 14 bed transitional residence for homeless women located in midtown Manhattan founded in 1977. 

 The ministry of The Dwelling Place has evolved over the years to meet the ever-changing face of homelessness. Yet its mission remains steadfast, to offer safe housing and individualized care, support, and guidance to homeless women as they build a sustainable, self-supported lifestyle. The Board of Directors, administrative director and staff of The Dwelling Place of NY serve in collaboration with the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany in response to the needs of homeless women and to advocate for compassionate and just services for the most vulnerable in our society.

 The 14-bed transitional housing provides personalized care, support, and guidance to help residents build a sustainable, self-supported life. The Organization offers a range of services to fulfill each woman’s individual needs while nurturing her unique talents.

 Services include: 

    • physical and mental health assessment of each new resident 

 

 

    • clean, safe housing 

 

 

    • daily breakfast, takeout lunch, dinner, and an evening snack 

 

 

    • individual guidance offered by an assigned case manager 

 

 

    • visits twice a month from the Project Renewal Outreach Team for psychiatric and medical evaluations and medications, if necessary 

 

 

    • referrals for professional counseling and day treatment programs 

 

 

    • money management 

 

 

    • medication management 

 

 

    • structured daily living – learning to live within rules of sobriety, respect for others and safety 

 

 

    • an environment of love, security and dignity

 

 The Dwelling Place of NY also serves weekly and holiday dinners to former residents now placed in permanent housing, elderly neighbors living on fixed income and women who are living on the streets.  The Organization is run by a staff of nine.  The Organization is supported through fundraising and grants.

 About the Role:

 TDP is looking for an Administrative Director to manage the residence.  The Administrative Director of The Dwelling Place of NY is the chief executive officer of the organization working to ensure that the mission entrusted to The Dwelling Place by its sponsor, the Franciscan Sisters of Allegany, is lived out faithfully and effectively for the sake of the homeless women being served. Guided and supervised by the Board of Directors, the Administrative Director establishes an internal and external leadership role, overseeing the daily operations, budgetary needs, and strategic plans for the residence while being the face of The Dwelling Place to the public.

 Please note, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, The Dwelling Place of New York, like many other nonprofits, is currently in transition.  While it is unable to continue the mission of taking in additional residents at this time, the Organization continues to operate, providing takeout meals to the needy.  The current plan is to keep the residence open while developing a long-term strategic plan for how the residence will operate once the City re-opens.  The Board of Directors is looking for new leadership to guide the organization at this critical time and provide critical operating, strategic planning and organizational leadership.

Specific responsibilities include: 

 

Operations:    Manage all aspects of the operation of the residence.  This includes the development of long-term strategic vision plans on how to maintain operations and the structure of the organization, programmatic planning, service delivery and day-to-day operations of the facility. Oversee maintenance and schedule repairs and upgrades as needed. Maintain capital needs budget, vendor contracts and project oversight.  

 

Staffing: Hiring, scheduling, and supervising professional and auxiliary staff. Developing job descriptions, staffing charts, overseeing employee policies, training, performance, payroll, and benefits.   

 

Residents:  Oversee and participate in intake interviews; review weekly reports from case managers; develop resident policies and procedures, provide guidance and oversight of all resident issues.   

 

Financial Management: Manage all financial operations of the residence including all banking, account receivables, accounts payable, payroll, taxes, donations, grants and financial reporting.  Monthly tracking of expenses and revenue, reconciliations of operating accounts; prepare annual budget and audit reports, track all investments accounts. 

 

Board of Directors: Serve as President of the Board, with heavy interaction with the Board Chair and Treasurer.  Schedule Board meetings, prepare all Board reports, collaborate with Board Chair, keep in regular communication with board members, attend committee meetings, prepare yearly report for Annual Meeting with members of the leadership team of Franciscan Sisters of Allegany.

 Fundraising and Grant Writing: Work in collaboration with Board of Directors to plan and execute fundraising events. Oversees direct mail appeals; social media posts; researches and writes grants.  Manage and track all grants and restricted funds to ensure compliance.  Oversee the recording and proper acknowledgement of all donations; build donor relationships.  Serve as the face of The Dwelling Place of N.Y. for speaking engagements, direct appeals, media coverage. 

The ideal candidate will have: 

 

·       Experience in the nonprofit human services sector, preferably with experience working at a transitional home

 

 ·       Strong leadership skills 

 

·       Financial management capabilities, knowledge of Quickbooks is a plus 

 

·       Experience managing a team of employees 

 

·       Fundraising, donor management, and marketing experience 

 

·       Knowledge of grant writing and grant compliance 

 

·       Strong strategic planning, communications and problem-solving skills 

 

·       Commitment to the mission and the ability to foster a mission-driven culture

 Salary and Benefits:

 Salary: $60,000
