Nonprofit New York works to strengthen and unite New York’s nonprofits – building a thriving community of extraordinary nonprofits – a relentless, collective force for good.

With nearly 1,600 members, Nonprofit New York has been building a powerful nonprofit community for 35 years. The organization believes strongly that the nonprofit sector can do more good when we do it together. Nonprofit New York works with more than 2,200 organizations throughout New York City, Long Island, and Westchester to provide resources and education to help them reach new levels of excellence and effectiveness. The organization rallies the nonprofit community to strengthen the entire sector. As the largest nonprofit membership organization in the region, Nonprofit New York represents all types of nonprofits on issues facing the whole nonprofit sector. Nonprofit New York continues to grow its budget, reach, and relevance. Through a three-year strategic plan, Nonprofit New York diversified its staff, Board, revenue sources, and programing. The organization’s extensive roster of training programs, online Knowledge Center, and on-demand HelpLine are utilized by members and nonmembers alike. Nonprofit New York offers group-buying that improves the bottom line of member organizations. Nonprofit New York provides advocacy with like-minded nonprofit leaders interested in solving big problems and facilitates the prestigious Government Relations Council. Nonprofit New York manages the renowned Nonprofit Excellence Awards and created the city’s only nonprofit management conference. The organization recently upgraded all technology and evaluation platforms, including a custom-built online platform, The Community. Previously known as Nonprofit Coordinating Committee, Nonprofit New York recently moved into the Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice.

About the Opportunity

Nonprofit New York has a committed, engaged Board that seeks an outstanding President and CEO to guide and to lead this precedent-setting membership organization into a new era of leadership in the New York City region. Reporting to the Board, the President and CEO will leverage a talented professional staff, build relationships, advance program offerings, advocate for all nonprofit organizations, and serve as an external presence to expand funding. The organization is well-positioned to build upon its exciting momentum and embark upon its next strategic plan. Nonprofit New York is fiscally sound and enjoys multiple revenue streams.

Specifically, the Presidential Search and Transition Committee is seeking a visionary, inspirational, supportive and highly-respected leader with the following qualities and skills:

• Set a creative, innovative, inspiring vision for the future of this membership institution with demonstrated passion for building capacity for nonprofit organizations: large and small, established and emerging, from a wide-range of cause areas

• Offer strategic insight into the challenges and opportunities facing today’s nonprofit sector coupled with a solutions mindset to help nonprofits meet those challenges

• Demonstrate a track record of fundraising success with the ability to strategically expand and diversify sustainable revenue streams, build strong relationships with donors/supporters, and confidently make “the ask”

• Bring outstanding executive management skill and experience –10+ years – and an exceptional ability to engage, deploy, develop and empower a talented staff of ten

• Offer significant marketing and external relations skills, including brand-building and movement-making, coupled with the ability to be an articulate spokesperson and influencer

• Serve as an adept convener of strategic partners, building new partnerships and coalescing coalitions that interact with governmental leaders

• Lead the ongoing improvement-process related to member programs and services

• Champion diversity, inclusion and equity in all aspects of the organization’s work

• Bring demonstrated experience interfacing with all sectors: government, nonprofits, foundations and corporations

• Have experience in public policy, systems change, advocacy and/or government relations with the ability to work closely with Nonprofit New York’s highly-regarded Government Relations Council to influence, set or shape a public policy and regulatory agenda for the New York nonprofit sector

• Serve as a strong partner with the Board of Directors

• Have a high-level of familiarity with the nonprofit sector in New York and/or keen appreciation for the role of a membership organization supporting member organizations

• Demonstrate experience helping an organization punch above its weight class by nimbly and flexibly leveraging resources and technology

An advanced degree is a plus but is not required.
