The Director of Communications and Development is a critical role for the organization which has communications and advocacy at its core.

The successful candidate will be responsible for strengthening our capabilities and resources in these two key areas to ensure our outputs match and drive the ambition of the organization. This role will oversee a passionate and capable team of communications and development professionals, all located in the New York office.

    • A demonstrated passion for and experience of issues linked to the environment, better governance and/or human rights. Strong belief that business has an important role to play in building a sustainable, inclusive future. 
    • An effective storyteller with a good sense of brand strategy and development who understands how to bring our vision to life reaching well-defined, influential audiences.
    • Ability and experience in developing high-level partnerships with international institutional and corporate funders, and a deep understanding of the ecosystem in which we work. At the same time, offering creative ideas and a clear vision for how to both nurture existing donors and diversify the current funding model. 
    • Experience as an organizational leader, nurturing and leading dynamic teams as well as developing strong and positive working relationships with colleagues across locations and in our B Team Leader companies and partners.

Major Responsibilities:

     Strategy Development

    • Provide the highest level strategic guidance on communications and development across the organization
    • Oversee the ongoing development and implementation of an existing brand, a narrative and the communications of the brand position internally and externally 
    • Create high-impact communications strategies including a creative social media strategy for the overall organization and oversee their flawless implementation 
    • Work closely with The B Team cause teams to devise communications campaigns that are rooted in a stakeholder engagement strategy, support clear advocacy positions, and drive tangible impact   
    • Create and implement a funding strategy that increases income and enhances sustainability for the organization and its mission 

     Media Relations

    • Devise high-impact media relations strategies that deliver on the organisation’s vision as well as specific strategies for cause-led campaigns 
    • Utilize existing relationships, as well as cultivate new contacts with media outlets and key journalists, to amplify messages via media partnerships and earned media coverage
    • Work with the team to identify strategic moments and new champions to influence target stakeholders and amplify our work

     Content Development

    • Oversee the production of high-quality, relevant, timely and compelling content that supports the work of The B Team and its causes, including updated     messaging, thought leadership, media pitches and website content.
    • Oversee the design and development of all branded materials (written, audio/visual and digital) to ensure the brand is well represented in a high-quality, consistent manner.
    • Create/build a highly visual and engaging storytelling program that effectively validates the efficacy of B Team’s work and outcomes
    • Supporting the communications manager to see through the final stages of the redevelopment and redesign of bteam.org

     Development 

    • Create an ambitious 3-5 year development strategy, incorporating the current funding program, for B Team with specific and measurable goals and objectives to broaden the reach and long term sustainability of the organization
    • Collaborate closely with our cause teams to ensure our donors support and leverage the impact of our activities
    • Explore new funding models and tools from outside of The B Team’s current donor community 
    • Work with the team to ensure current donor relationships and donor management systems remain strong
    • Ensure B Team meets and exceeds all Better Business Bureau charity standards and is ranked with key organizations such as Charity Navigator

     Team Leadership & Finances

    • Develop and lead the communications and development team members to ensure they achieve their full potential. Effectively bringing the team together to advance mutual projects that support the department goals
    • Develop the communication and development budgets to ensure they reflect the key strategic priorities, and manage those budgets throughout the year.

Required Profile:

We are looking for an experienced candidate who:

      Has 10+ years of relevant experience, preferably operating at the highest level of communications and development.

      Is a good listener with a collaborative leadership style.

      Has excellent interpersonal, networking and written/verbal communication skills for working with both internal and external partners.

      Is highly responsive, results-oriented and proactive with a flexible approach.

      Is patient, level-headed and calm under pressure. 

      Is good at providing clear direction and setting a vision for the team – but equally adept at focusing on details to ensure production quality is high.

      Can think on their feet, is comfortable in a start-up environment and is adept at learning new topics on the fly.

Compensation is in the range of $150-175k, plus a comprehensive benefits package including 100% healthcare, matched investment contributions, unlimited leave, paid parental leave, etc.
