Her Justice is a nonprofit organization that provides free legal services to women living in poverty in New York City in family, divorce, and immigration matters. Founded in

1993, Her Justice recruits and mentors volunteer attorneys from the City’s top law firms to provide free legal help to address individual and systemic legal barriers. The attorney in this position will be based in our Manhattan office.

Her Justice is seeking a dynamic and experienced family and matrimonial law attorney to lead a team of experienced attorneys and work with the Senior Legal Team of Managing Attorneys.  The candidate will have 10+ years of experience in family law and matrimonial law, have strong organizational and management skills, have supervisory experience, and have experience working with both our client population (women living in poverty in New York City from diverse backgrounds), as well as lawyers at major law firms. Managing Attorneys not only serve as a senior subject matter expert in their

area, but also support all attorneys in their department, and function as a key liaison with pro bono counsels and other counterparts at private law firms.

Job Responsibilities:

      • Work with 4person Senior Legal Team to ensure that legal department case placement and department goals are met, and work with staff to meet individual and departmental goals
      • Serve as senior resource and authority to staff on substantive issues in Family and Matrimonial issues
      • Directly supervise all attorneys in the family/matrimonial practice group, with several direct reports
      • Lead Family/ Matrimonial practice group meetings, facilitate discussion on cases and legal strategy
      • Work with Legal Director and Managing Policy Attorney on the agency’s growing policy work
      • Mentor and support volunteer attorneys who are handling matrimonial and/ or family law cases, including providing consultation, reviewing documents, brainstorming strategy, and otherwise ensuring volunteers are and feel prepared
      • Conduct several CLE training programs a year on various topics in the areas of family/matrimonial issues
      • Create a variety of ways to deliver pro bono opportunities to lawyers in firms and in corporations
      • Serve as a strategic partner in leading the legal department in developing new initiatives, participating in policy efforts
      • Participate in community outreach, media relations, and other forms of marketing and public education
      • Work with Legal Director on grant applications and grant reporting

Qualifications:

      • JD degree and bar admission in New York State
      • At least 10+ years of experience handling matrimonial and family law cases in New York State
      • Experience supervising attorneys, required
      • Experience with family and/ or matrimonial law in a nonprofit setting, preferred
      • Experience representing indigent clients, survivors of domestic violence and clients from diverse backgrounds and communities is preferred.
      • Excellent written and oral communication skills
      • Strong organizational, interpersonal and leadership skills
      • Computer proficiency– Microsoft Office and database systems; experience with Legal Server strongly preferred
      • Experience grant reporting on IOLA, Judiciary and other government grants, preferred
      • A demonstrated passion for social justice.

Salary: Range depending on experience and within the range of $100,000 –$115,000.
