Founded in 1968, the Guttmacher Institute is a global leader in advancing sexual and reproductive health and rights. Through a unique and interrelated program of research, policy analysis and communications, the Institute works to generate new ideas, encourage enlightened public debate and promote sound policies and programs, with an overarching goal of ensuring the highest standard of sexual and reproductive health and rights for all people worldwide. In 2018, the Institute reached its 50th year milestone, and is marking this next stage in our history by embarking on important social justice work that is both internally and externally facing. This includes racial equity and anti-sexual harassment initiatives, seeking to build a healthy workplace culture and strengthen the solidarity and resilience of the organization, and to move towards challenging and dismantling all forms of oppression.

 

Position

The Director of Communications is a member of the Institute’s senior management team and oversees all aspects of the communications department, including setting a communications vision and strategy, articulating priorities and processes that support them, and ensuring that they in turn support Institutional goals. The Director leads a team of more than 10 staff and works closely with colleagues from across the Institute to collectively further the organization’s mission.

 

Responsibilities

    • Develop and own a cohesive communications strategy that advances Guttmacher’s mission and aligns with its strategic plan and equity/inclusion values
    • Serve as a member of the Institute’s senior management team
    • In collaboration with senior communications staff, set clear communications goals that are actionable and measurable
    • Guide and support communications team members in implementing communications strategy and making adjustments as needed
    • Serve as an ambassador for the communications team and its strategy across the Institute, including ensuring appropriate funding, staffing and resources are allocate
    • Fully engage in and help lead the culture change work underway at the Institute
    • Supervise, mentor and support senior communications staff, and set a positive and productive tone for the team as a whole
    • Facilitate ongoing innovation, and support the development and implementation of new initiatives and processes
    • Stay informed about project funding and budgets and work with divisional budget manager to revise as needed

 

Qualifications

An experienced communications professional with demonstrated understanding of and ability to advance complex social justice issues, to engage diverse people in diverse contexts, and to unify different perspectives in order to advance our mission.

    • Has minimum 8-10 years of experience in communications
    • Has experience working in fields of public health, reproductive justice, human rights, social justice, and/or social science
    • Has a nimble and strategic mindset as well as a keen sense of the evolving communications landscape
    • Is experienced in managing and mentoring individuals and in building and managing diverse teams; commitment to helping staff develop professionally and to fostering teamwork
    • Demonstrates maturity and leadership with the ability to serve as a collaborative and unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
    • Has ability to collaborate and work with different types of personalities in an effective manner
    • Demonstrates cultural competency and inclusive leadership skills, as well as an understanding of reproductive health, rights and justice
    • Has ability to serve as a trusted leader and advocate within the Institute and externally
    • Understands the modern digital landscape and its platforms and products
    • Demonstrates strong commitment to the mission of the Institute
    • Has excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Has ability to travel domestically and internationally
