The Center for Court Innovation is a non-profit organization that works to create a more effective and humane justice system by performing original research and helping launch reforms around the world. The Center creates operating projects that have been documented to reduce the use of jail and prison, assist victims of crime, and strengthen communities. Nationally and internationally, the Center performs original research and provides consulting services to justice innovators.

 

We operate at the cutting edge of criminal justice reform in the New York area by developing, planning, launching, and managing large-scale projects that serve thousands of justice-involved people each year. Our projects include the award-winning Red Hook Community Justice Center, the Midtown Community Court, Bronx Community Solutions, Brooklyn Justice Initiatives, Staten Island Justice Center, and Newark Community Solutions. We also operate supervised release programs (as an alternative to bail) in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island; Project Reset, an early diversion program in Manhattan, the Bronx and Brooklyn; young adult courts in Brooklyn and Manhattan; and a new felony alternative-to-incarceration program in Manhattan. Our criminal justice programs work with nearly 30,000 individuals each year—with the prospect of more in the days to come.

 

The Associate Director, Criminal Justice, will work with the Director and the Deputy Director of Criminal Justice and our operating projects to strengthen the operations, policies and practices that help shape criminal justice reform in New York City. The Associate Director will work with other departments within the Center—including research, technology, human resources, fiscal, development, and legal—to ensure quality programming. They will also work closely with system actors, including judges, prosecutors, defense advocates, and city and state officials. They also will help coordinate and support planning, fundraising, project management, and implementation for many of our ambitious new initiatives and will be responsible for ensuring ongoing consistency and excellence of operations. The Associate Director will supervise the project director of a particularly ambitious new project, the Manhattan Justice Resource Center, that is currently in implementation. The position reports to the Center’s Director, Criminal Justice.

 

 

 

 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to

 

·         Work with Center’s team based at the main headquarters—the Director, Criminal Justice; Deputy Director, Criminal Justice; Deputy Director, Criminal Court Operations; and Deputy Director, Diversion—and others to ensure smooth operations and day-to-day management of the Criminal Justice department;

 

·         Develop and manage the design, planning, and implementation of new initiatives;

 

·         Develop and manage the operations of existing and new projects and programming, by establishing and monitoring new protocols, policies and procedures, best practices, and metrics, within and across operating projects;

 

·         Provide support and mentoring to program staff at operating projects – project directors, their deputies, case managers and social workers, intake specialists, resource coordinators, and community service supervisors;

 

·         Assist the Director, Criminal Justice, in supporting project directors at the Midtown Community Court and Red Hook Community Justice Center and other new projects;

 

·         Supervise the project director of an ambitious new project, Manhattan Justice Resource Center, that is currently in implementation

 

·         Coordinate and manage relationships with court partners, including judges, prosecutors, and defense attorneys and community stakeholders;

 

·         Work with Center development team and senior staff to identify funding opportunities and draft proposals;

 

·         Engage in ongoing outreach to city and state elected officials to explore possible support, understand city and state priorities, and provide updates on Center initiatives as needed;

 

·         Represent the Center at conferences, public meetings, and other events; and

 

·         Participate in internal meetings and help strengthen team dynamics.

 

 

Qualifications

 

  • BA required, JD or MA and/or significant experience in leadership roles in non-profit or government organizations strongly preferred.

 

  • Experience in the criminal justice field preferred.

 

  • Prior management experience required.

 

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

 

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

 

  • Ability to manage many projects and assignments simultaneously.

 

  • Ability to interact effectively with members of the judiciary, court, other criminal justice personnel, elected officials, and city and state agency representatives.

 

  • Ability to work well with colleagues, partners, and others.

 

Compensation: Salary range starts at $100,000. Excellent benefits package.
