POSITION OVERVIEW: National Latina Institute for Reproductive Health (NLIRH) seeks an expert bilingual (English/Spanish) communications strategist to lead the communications team toward greater impact in building Latinx power for reproductive health and justice by 1) strengthening our brand identity and voice; 2) growing our base of supporters and reaching key audiences; and 3) driving action and engagement. We are in an exciting organizational moment. We recently concluded an extensive strategic planning process and are seeking a leader ready and able to take our communications efforts to the next level. The Senior Director of Communications & Public Affairs will be accountable for elevating a vision for NLIRH’s communications strategy, managing a team of communications staff to activate that vision, and adding a distinct, vital perspective to NLIRH’s senior leadership team. This position is supervised by the Deputy Director and reports to both the Deputy Director and Executive Director. 

ABOUT NLIRH: Founded in 1994, NLIRH is the only national reproductive justice organization dedicated to advancing health, dignity, and justice for the 28 million Latinas, their families, and communities in the United States. We elevate Latina leaders, mobilize our families and communities, transform the cultural narrative, and catalyze policy change. NLIRH is a national organization with headquarter offices in New York City and Washington, D.C., and field offices in Virginia, Texas, New York, and Florida.

POSITION LOCATION: Washington, D.C., or New York, NY

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

Develop and execute strategic communications plans 

  • Define and execute the department’s overall communications strategy and plans in alignment with the organization’s larger vision, mission, values, and strategic plan priorities
  • Create campaigns that effectively reach new audiences, build our base of supporters, raise reproductive justice visibility, and ignite action (e.g. narrative shifting, storytelling, education, recruitment, and issue-specific advocacy campaigns)    
  • Advance research and community informed communications efforts and campaigns in close collaboration with the Government Relations, Community Mobilization, and Development teams
  • Inform and support Government Relations’ communications outreach to members of Congress, state legislators, elected and appointed officials, and government agencies
  • In partnership with the Community Mobilization team, oversee spokesperson training and media cultivation of NLIRH’s grassroots activists and leaders
  • Oversee rapid-response protocols, campaigns, and messaging while empowering the team to pursue and proactive communications projects
  • Grow and innovate NLIRH’s digital media strategy and presence (e.g., social media, blogs, website)
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with relevant journalists, outlets, and consultants, consistently growing our English and Spanish-language media list
  • Oversee press releases, pitching, and other media strategies to prompt coverage on NLIRH and Latinx reproductive justice issues, utilizing activist stories, NLIRH spokespeople, and other resources
  • Collaborate with Latinx and reproductive justice coalitions, movement partners, and mission-aligned advocacy organizations in order to advance a reproductive justice agenda
  • Oversee the tracking, measuring, and reporting of communications, media, and social media metrics

Strengthen the brand identity and voice of NLIRH

  • Sharpen NLIRH’s voice and brand positioning at the intersection of Latinx reproductive justice and immigrant rights both internally and externally to key audiences
  • Serve as executive editor for communications channels and materials, including the website and digital communications, print and online publications, and other marketing materials to ensure the NLIRH voice resonates for our different key audience segments

Manage a team and foster collaboration 

  • Participate as a key member of the Senior Leadership Team in order to build plans for the organization’s strategic, mission- and vision-driven growth
  • Manage and support the growth of department staff (currently three full-time members)
  • Establish well-defined systems to collaborate smartly with the Community Mobilization, Government Relations, and Development teams as well as coalition and movement partners
  • Hire and manage consultants to support specific communications activities as needed
  • Oversee the communications department budget
  • Contribute to a healthy, collaborative, and values-aligned organizational culture

Skills, experience, and personal qualifications: 

  • 10 years’ experience working in communications
  • Substantive track record of nonprofit leadership experience
  • Extensive knowledge of and commitment to reproductive justice and related social justice issues (e.g., immigration, Latinx civil rights)
  • Commitment to advancing NLIRH’s core strategies to build Latinx power in pursuit of reproductive justice—policy advocacy, community mobilization, leadership development, and narrative shifting
  • Strong ability to execute communications strategies with an intersectional lens
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills in both Spanish and English
  • Experience serving as media spokesperson, plus ability to train others
  • Superior strategic thinking, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Financial acumen regarding efficient use of budget and resources
  • Commitment to building productive, enjoyable partnerships with diverse internal and external stakeholders
  • Confidence and expertise in craft as a communications strategist
  • Ability to travel occasionally throughout the year
  • Communications agency experience a plus
